A
Stand up and defend your essay
The capstone. You turn your essay's argument into a live presentation, deliver it with confidence, and defend it under questions. Anyone can read slides aloud — the marks are in clarity, slide design, and how you handle the Q&A.
Logistics — read twice- Do not be late. Lateness costs −10% of your presentation score.
- Arrive at least 15 minutes early and load your PPT onto the room computer.
- The official P2 rubric on the LMS governs grading — read it before you build slides.
B
Turn the essay into a talk
| ThesisOpen + restate | State your thesis in the first 30 seconds; restate it in the conclusion so the room remembers it. |
| SignpostingGuide the ear | Spoken transitions so listeners never get lost (see the bank below). |
| CRAPSlide design | Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, Proximity. One idea per slide; visuals over walls of text. |
Signposting word-bankOpen today I will argue… · this presentation makes three points
Move on this leads to… · my second point is… · building on that…
Show evidence as this chart shows… · the data here tells us…
Close to bring this together… · so, returning to my thesis…
C
A 4–6 minute shape
| Hook + thesis~45 sec | Grab attention; state your position clearly. |
| Point 1–3~3 min | One argument per section, each with a visual and a citation. |
| Conclusion~45 sec | Restate the thesis, summarise, end on a final insight. |
| Q&Alive | Take questions and defend your choices. |
D
Win the Q&A
Under pressureStrategy: clarify → pause → reframe → bridge back to your thesis. Anticipate the obvious objections before the day. Concede small points gracefully (“that is fair, and…”) but hold your core claim with evidence. A short, calm answer beats a long, nervous one.
E
Deliver it well
DOPace; gesture; eye contact; keep body and slides visible on camera; one clean take.
AVOIDFiller words; reading slides; tiny text; rushing the conclusion.
Before you present- Thesis stated early and restated in the conclusion
- Slides follow CRAP; one idea per slide; signposting throughout
- Rehearsed to 4–6 min; gestures, eye contact, no fillers
- Q&A answers prepared; clarify–pause–reframe–bridge ready
- Arrived 15 min early; PPT on Canvas; video uploaded after; self-assessment done
